A bay window seat with a deep cushion is the best spot in this Santa Teresa condo, looking out over the red rooftops. Two bedrooms hold three beds, and the two bathrooms mean nobody waits in the morning. The dining room has a long wooden table on red hardwood, and the kitchen beside it holds an oven, a stovetop and a washing machine in the corner. Free parking comes with the unit, which matters on these steep lanes. The tram stop, two bakeries and the artist studios along the main street are a short walk downhill.

Neighborhood highlights
Santa Teresa sits on a hill above the noise, reached by a small yellow tram that rattles across the arches below. The streets are cobbled and steep, lined with old mansions that artists took over decades ago and never left. Views appear without warning between houses, and the ruined mansion turned public garden has the best of them. Evenings are slow up here, which is the whole point of staying rather than just visiting.
