Neighborhood highlights
Miragaia is the quiet stretch between the busy riverfront and the hill, easy to walk past and much better to stay in. Its lanes climb in short flights of steps past houses in faded tile, with the odd doorway opening onto a view of the water. A large public garden sits at the top, with peacocks, a glass dome and the best free lookout in the city. Nights stay calm even though the crowds are five minutes downhill.
