The Centro is built on the ruins of the original island capital, and the excavated temple sits open to the sky beside the cathedral. The main square is vast and mostly bare stone, which makes the flag ceremonies and the crowds around them feel theatrical. Pedestrian streets run off it lined with tiled palaces, marble theaters and shops that each sell one specific thing. Days are loud and packed; once the offices close the same streets go remarkably still.
