Bairro Alto keeps two completely different schedules. Until early evening it is a quiet grid of narrow streets where residents hang washing and small grocers keep the doors propped open. After ten the bars fill, the crowd moves outdoors with drinks, and the noise runs on into the small hours. Guests who want to be in the middle of it will love the address; light sleepers should ask for a room at the back.
