The kitchen opens onto the living room and is stocked with an oven, a stovetop, a kettle and a coffee maker. A wall-mounted TV faces the gray sofa, and the ceiling is high enough that the room stays cool through the afternoon. The riverside squares, the yellow tram line and the pedestrian shopping street all start at the corner.

Neighborhood highlights
Baixa is the flat, orderly heart of the city, laid out in a grid after the earthquake and never rebuilt out of it. Wide patterned sidewalks run from the river square to the old station, lined with shoe shops, pastry counters and street musicians. Everything is walkable, and a wrought-iron elevator carries you straight up to the neighborhood above. It is the easiest base in the city for a first visit and the busiest one.
